Summary:
In the beginning of the novel, there's a young girl Susie Salmon. Susie was only 14 years old when she was raped and killed. The tragedy began when young Susie was on her usual walk home from school. She went through the cornfield to get home. In the cornfield she met her neighbor Mr. Harvey and he began to talk to Susie. He invited her back to his house. Considering that her parents where friends with Mr. Harvey she didn’t see any harm going to his house. He built some kind of play house for the children and that’s where he brought Susie. That’s when Susie began to feel uncomfortable when he was being sweet then sexual. Then Susie tried to fight back when he attempted to rape her but she wasn’t strong enough against him. After he raped her Susie knew he was going to kill her and that’s exactly what happened.
Once the police began to investigate the situation, they found was sure Susie was murdered when they found her elbow. Her parents where heartbroken and devastated. Her older sister Lindsey acted as though she didn’t even care that her younger sister had passed away. Her family and the detectives tried really hard to figure out who her murderer is and how she dies. As for Susie, she is in heaven looking upon her family and friends she wants to help her family figure out who killed her.
Quote:
“It was an elbow. The Gilberts’ dig found it” (Sebold 24).
Reactions:
This is when the Salmon family received the evidence that their precious daughter was killed because they found her elbow. When her older Lindsey found out that they found an elbow she threw up with disgust. How and why would someone cut up her body? When her family found out she was dead that all had a moment of silence and everyone had time to themselves to cry about the situation.

Reactions:
I felt bad for Lily. Her father is a real Jerk. I thought he actually cared about her since he took he out of jail. Then I thought what about Rosleen? Why didnt he get her as well? I was actually happy but also scared when Lily ran away from home. I thought she was making a big mistake, and T-Ray was going to find her and punish her. Also I wondered why Rosleen was constantly upset with Lily. I think August is a really sweet and generous person, considering that she let Lily and Rosleen stay at the farm and also didnt kick them out due to her skin compliction.

When Lily was getting ready for the first grade T.Ray confronted her and was getting ready to tell her what really happened to her mother. Lily told him everything that he remembered. Then, T.Ray told Lily that she shot her mother. It wasn’t on purpose because she was only four and she didn’t know better. Lily is known to be very smart in school. One day she told her teacher when she grows up she is going to be work with beauty. Her teacher told her she was to smart to go to beauty school. She should become a professor or an author of books. She loved to read and write poetry. T.Ray on the other hand didn’t approve of reading. If she was caught reading during the job he would be upset and tell her that she is wasting her time.
Quote:
“The queen, for the part is the unifying force of the community; if she is removed from the hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence” (Monk Kidd 1).
Reaction:
The quote is very symbolic because it explains how bees act when there leader the queen isn’t around. Lily’s mother Dephora was the queen of the house. Once the room became silent Lily and her father became ill and they have recognized their queen wasn’t around. I thought T. Ray was killed Dephora because when ever Lily would mention her he would have an attitude and have to throw something. Why would they leave the gun on the grown or why didn’t they take it from Lily when she had it in her hands. I think this could have been prevented.
